STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE THESE MINI NUTELLA PUFF PASTRY CHRISTMAS TREES
(Watch how I shaped my mini Christmas trees on Instagram reel)
Here’s how you make them:
- Two sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 1/4-1/3 cup nutella, jam, tahini, or pesto
- Powdered sugar for dusting, optional
Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Set aside. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out both puff pastry sheets on a clean and flat surface. Evenly spread the chocolate spread onto one of the puff pastry sheets, covering all corners. Then, place the second sheet of puff pastry on top of the filling.
Use a sharp knife, or a pizza cutter to make 1 inch wide strips. Next, grab a strip and using your hands carefully fold it over itself four times, to form a Christmas tree shape. Press a skewer through the pastry tree and place it on the prepared baking tray. Repeat with the rest of the strips.
Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 15 minutes while you preheat the oven to 375F. Then, remove from the fridge and bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven, let them cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, and enjoy!
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE THIS PESTO PUFF PASTRY CHRISTMAS TREE
(Watch how I shaped my mini Christmas trees on Instagram reel)
Here’s how you make it:
- Two sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 1/2 cup pesto, chocolate spread, or jam
- 1 egg for an egg wash
- 1 teaspoon milk
Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Set aside. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out both puff pastry sheets on a clean and flat surface. Stack the sheets together and cut them into a large triangle. Separate them as soon as you can so you don’t risk them sticking together.
Place one triangle of puff pastry sheet on the prepared baking sheet and spread the pesto all over the puff pastry sheet. Then, layer the second sheet of puff pastry on top, lining up the edges. Now you have two layers of puff pastry, with pesto in the middle like a sandwich.
Using a sharp knife cut about 1-inch wide horizontal to make the tree branches, cut even pieces on both sides of the triangle. Make sure to leave the center intact, about 1,25-inch from the tip of the triangle down to the bottom so it will look like a tree trunk.
Twist each branch, two times if you can and lay end flat onto baking sheet. This helps you to be able to see the twists. Use a star cookie cutter to create a star for the top of the tree out of the extra scrap pieces and place it on top of the tree.
Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 15 minutes while you preheat the oven to 375F. Beat 1 egg with 1 teaspoon milk to create an egg wash, then remove the tree from the fridge and use a pastry brush to the egg on the pastry.
Bake in preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed up. Once the pastry is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly. Move the pastry to a serving platter and decorate with rosemary and cherry tomatoes. Enjoy warm!
TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST PUFF PASTRY CHRISTMAS TREES
- Bring the puff pastry to room temperature for about 30 minutes before rolling it.
- Use a floured work surface to prevent the dough from sticking. You can also roll your puff pastry in between parchment paper, this makes cleanup easier.
- After shaping your puff pastry Christmas tree, let it rest in the fridge before baking. Keep the pastry cold until you’re ready to bake it to avoid butter leak.
- Use a sharp knife to make clean cuts and avoid serrated knives.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS
These puff pastry trees are best served the day they’re made. They have the best texture on the first day. You can store the leftovers covered in the fridge for up to a week or freezer for up to a month! Then, reheat the leftovers in the microwave or in the oven covered with aluminum foil for best results.
